Anyone who would like to know more about alpacas can have a special tour of Pronkin’ Pastures conducted by owner LeeAnna Jorgenson. LeeAnna says “Each tour is different. Our goal is to provide a fun and educational experience.”
Most of the farm tours are between 30 and 45 minutes. Lots of free flowing conversation takes place at the fence lines. The alpacas are friendly and inquisitive and usually come right up to meet the visitors. LeeAnna adds, “If they are not being as friendly as they can be, I can always entice them to be friendlier with a few treats.”
LeeAnna has a general outline for the tours but she encourages people to ask lots of questions. Because conversations vary based upon the knowledge and interest of those on a tour, she notes that each tour follows a different direction.
In general, the topics covered during a tour include:
- A history of Pronkin’ Pastures.
- Information about LeeAnna and Ron and how they decided to get into the business of having an alpaca farm.
- Herd introductions, including the names, ages and special qualities of each of the animals that visitors meet.
- General alpaca information including how to care for the animals, what they eat, when they need to be sheared, and how much each alpaca has a distinct personality.
- If visitors have a special interest in how the farm is laid out – including the pasture, fencing and housing needs for the animals – that will be included.
- Any other alpaca related subject that comes up.
Photos are encouraged! Throughout the conversation visitors usually like to take advantage of photo opportunities that the alpacas present.
At Pronkin’ Pastures there is also educational signage covering basic alpaca facts and information placed around the property, so if visitors prefer more quiet and less conversation they are welcome to browse at their leisure as well.
LeeAnna notes, “While the herd is friendly and inquisitive, they generally don’t like to be touched, so once the fun at the fence line ends, we head to the shop where I have alpaca fiber on display so visitors can get their hands on the fiber and see what is so wonderful about it.”
