Cary Loopuyt Jurriaans offers a wide range of classes in drawing and painting at Whidbey Fine Arts Studio in Langley

by Carolyn Tamler 2nd January 2023

Cary Loopuyt Jurriaans has been a professional artist for over 25 years. She was born in the Netherlands but moved to the United States 50 years ago with her two young
children. For most of her life she knew she wanted to be an artist.

She did training in art at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art (now the Gage Academy) and at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. She describes herself as “A classical realist painter.”

Cary and her husband, Sieb, run the Whidbey Island Fine Arts Studio, which brings world class artists to Whidbey to teach classical and contemporary drawing and painting. She started her Fine Arts Studio in Fall City but moved it to her present location on Whidbey Island 15 years ago (she has children and grandchildren living on Whidbey). The studio has an international reputation, and artists come to both teach and take classes.

Cary’s work has been exhibited in numerous juried shows including the Oil Painters of America and the Poncho Invitational in Seattle. Her work is in private collections in the United States and Europe. She is the first female signature member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists.

In addition to a wide selection of her artworks, Cary provides guidance to other artists and helps with drawing, oil painting, materials, and techniques. She comments: “I enjoy mentoring others, and I love my interactions with students and other instructors.” She notes that the definition of mentorship is “A developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person in a certain field helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person in that field.”

Cary describes the greatest joy from her work: “I love painting and honoring things in everyday life.”

Eight to ten workshops are being offered at the Whidbey Fine Arts Studio each year, and classes are available for diverse levels of artists.

Cary Jurriaans believes: "The more you learn, the more you know; the more you know, the more you know you need to learn."

Cary’s artwork covers many subjects, but she is especially known for her still life paintings and animal portraits. To learn more about her classes and to see a selection of her artwork, visit her website: https://www.caryjurriaans.com and https://www.whidbeyislandfas.com
