Suzie Reynolds had an extensive resume as a restaurant manager, pastry chef, and many other skills before a friend on Whidbey told her about a job opening at Whidbey Center for the Arts (WICA) as the Front of the House Manager. She sent a resume to Deana Duncan, interviewed for the job, which she says felt very comfortable and welcoming, and accepted their offer. She started in her new position on March 1st.
As Front of the House Manager, Suzie says, “I have a lot to balance.” She is in charge of coordinating the activities of the volunteers who are working the concessions, bar, ushering, ticket sales, merchandise tables and any other needs when the theater is open. In the coming months, she says will be work on developing and expanding the volunteer program.
Even though her job keeps her very busy, she says, “I love what I do.” She especially appreciates that WICA provides a range of theatrical and musical experiences that are accessible for everyone. WICA offers discounted tickets for their performances at the window. This year, the theater is also serving as a court for three Washington State Supreme Court cases.
She notes that WICA is a non-profit theater that has been on the island for 25 years. There is a policy to work in community partnerships and to share ideas and programs.
Suzie has been on Whidbey with her family (her husband who is a pilot for Life Flight and two daughters, ages 8 and 1) for three years. In addition to her job at WICA, Suzie is an EMT volunteer with South and Central Whidbey Fire Departments. (An EMT has the skills to assess a patient's condition and to manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies).
In addition to everything mentioned here, Suzie says “I’m still learning about WICA and what needs I can meet.”

WICA has partnered with Island Shakespeare Festival to host the Whidbey Repertory Festival, going on now through March 26. They will also be adopting their “pay what you can” at the door tickets one hour before showtime for the duration of the festival.
