Mutiny Bay Antiques and Vintage Mercantile in Freeland is the Largest Antique Mall on Whidbey Island

by Carolyn Tamler 10th April 2023

Mutiny Bay Antiques and Vintage Mercantile, at 1612 E Main St in Freeland, offers a magical experience for those who love antiques or simply want to explore a unique retail store.  The shop is actually a 3,200 square foot mall showcasing 27 individually curated dealer spaces. Their offerings include a wide range of antiques, vintage items, as well as new items.

The mall has been in business at this location for 16 years, and current owner, Tamara Petersen, has been a vendor or part-owner since 2014. She notes that the shop’s customers are both islanders looking to buy gifts or decorate their homes, and visitors seeking a treasure or memento from their trip to Whidbey Island. She adds: “A lot of our customers are collectors who like to travel and visit antique shops in search of special items. We also get families and ‘gals getaway’ groups enjoying a weekend and coming out for fun.”

A visitor will see that each space in the mall can be defined by a specific style: Mid-century Modern, Industrial, Modern Farmhouse, Antique Asian, Swedish Traditional, Beachcomber’s Finds, Eclectic Victorian, Contemporary, Traditional Home, to name a few. There are also seasonal updates and an annual Holiday Open House.

In the past few years, the shop has added new items including clothing, gifts, candles, wrapping paper and greeting cards, as well as items made by local crafters and artists. Almost all of the booth owners live locally and are passionate and knowledgeable about the items in their spaces.

When she moved to Whidbey 12 years ago, Tamara was drawn to the creative, artistic community on the island. “When I first became a part of the Mutiny Bay mall, I was really excited to find so many likeminded souls. There is a great feeling here of community; we share ideas and help each other.

This year, during the spring and summer months, a Vintage Garden shop will be featured on selected weekends as an outdoor “Pop-up.” To find out the dates, you can contact the shop, or check out Mutiny Bay Antiques on Facebook. You will also find up-to-date postings on the Facebook page as new items arrive at the store.

Mutiny Bay Antiques and Vintage Mercantile can be found at 1612 Main Street, Freeland. It is open seven days a week, Monday – Saturday, 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m, and Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. You can contact the store at mutinybayantiques@gmail.com or by phone at 360-331-3656.
