Simmons Garage is a family operation with a strong commitment to the community

by Carolyn Tamler 23rd October 2023

Ryan Berg, who purchased Simmons Garage on Whidbey Island in 2019, believes he is growing the legacy of the Simmons Garage that opened in 1947. The company has maintained a reputation for quality auto repair and maintenance.

Ryan got into the car business when he was just 19 years old. He became knowledgeable about all aspects of the business. He has a strong commitment not only to helping customers make the best choices, but also being a contributor to each of the communities where his businesses operate. He believes if a car is causing problems for a customer, it is important to help the customer prioritize what needs to be done. He even offers to help them find financing if this is necessary.

Ryan Berg was born on Whidbey, and he has lovely memories of hanging out with his grandpa, sitting in his lap on the backhoe, and calling out Bingo numbers on Friday nights at the Clinton Hall. Growing up on Whidbey he met many people who influenced him, including Gordon and Mel Simmons. Ryan notes: “I am truly honored to carry on the legacy of Simmons Garage, which has been in business for decades.”

In addition to the Simmons Garage in Clinton, there are two other locations in Arlington and Everett. Ryan currently has a total of 20 employees, including six at the Whidbey location and 14 at the two other locations. Ryan’s son, Matt, is the manager of the Whidbey location and his nephew, Kurtis, is a technician. McKenzie Peterson, who is a granddaughter of original owner Gordon Simmons, is the bookkeeper.

In addition to maintaining the reputation of the three garage locations, Ryan Berg has a strong commitment to providing a good environment for his employees. All of the Simmons employees receive health benefits, and the company keeps up with what is happening in the business of auto repair and maintenance. Ryan says, “I make the big brands work for my customers instead of the reverse.”

People driving by the Simmons location on Whidbey, near the Clinton ferry terminal, will notice a new look on the outside of the building. Ryan is also bringing new technology to his business that customers will notice and appreciate. He expects painting and repairs to be completed by November.

Ryan says, “I enjoy making my businesses play significant roles in each of the communities where they are located. I feel it’s my job to support the community around me first and foremost.” Before purchasing the Whidbey property, Ryan owned an auto repair shop in Arlington. He provides local sponsorship for the Salvation Army, the Lions Club, and veteran’s organizations. When talking with Ryan, it becomes obvious that customers and community are the major elements that define how he operates his business.
