The Woodpeckers of Washington

Considering that woodpeckers can slam their heads into solid wood up to 20 times a second with a force of 1,200 Gs, it's a wonder they have any brains to think with at all. Yet these highly specialized birds forage for food, find mates, raise their young, and delight us all with their antics. Washington State is rich in woodpecker species: 13 different species fill niches from the lowlands to coniferous-clad foothills.
