Timothy Haslet began at the Penn Cove Gallery in the fall of 2018. It took three different artists from the gallery to ask him to join before he committed himself. He shares, “The first artist to ask me whetted my appetite. The second to ask helped me to believe that it was possible. The third to ask became my confirmation of a good choice. I’m very grateful for their persistence!”
He paints his landscapes with a combination of acrylic and oil. Bright fluorescent colors are supported by softer and more subtle hues which create dynamic scenes, be they 4”x4” or 48”x60” in size.
He comments, “I have had so much support in my art career since joining this gallery. The business of being an artist takes time to learn, from not only how and what to create but how to display it and talk about it. This co-op model leads to moments of mentoring, and there is camaraderie: we are all in this together.”
A major feature of the artwork displayed at Penn Cove Gallery is that each artist is unique. On the website for the gallery - https://www.penncovegallery.com/ - an opening descriptive paragraph notes: “Penn Cove Gallery is the first cooperative art gallery in central Whidbey Island and the longest continuously operating co-op on the island, having served visitors and locals for more than 30 years. It was launched in 1994 when a group of local artists organized a gallery in Coupeville’s historic waterfront district. The not-for-profit gallery is administered and staffed by the artist members.”
The Penn Cove Gallery currently has twenty-five members. Every artist gets a section of a wall at the gallery to display their work. Each of the artists contributes his or her time, working one to two days a week at the gallery. When a work is sold, the artist contributes 10% to the gallery.
Penn Cove Gallery is located on the Coupeville Historic Waterfront that is part of the Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. Penn Cove Gallery is a member of the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce and Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association.
Penn Cove Gallery is open seven days a week. Current hours are 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
