Whidbey Island's Biercuterie: For the love of Beer and Cheese

Cheese lovers rejoice! Biercuterie, a haven for artisanal cheeses and craft beers, has opened its doors in downtown Freeland, offering a unique experience for both locals and visitors.

This charming shop is the realization of a long-held dream for co-owners Brian and Sarah Bystrom. Seattle native Brian grew up on the Eastside before moving to Los Angeles, where he met Sarah. A serendipitous encounter with a cheese shop in Venice sparked Brian's passion for cheese and his dream of becoming a cheesemonger.

Fast forward to 2020, Brian and Sarah, now married with two daughters, sought a change of pace. Drawn to Whidbey Island's close-knit community and the renowned Waldorf School for their children, they relocated from Redmond, embracing island life.

"Whidbey Island felt like a magical place," Sarah recalls. "We were fortunate to find a home on Double Bluff and quickly became part of this amazing community through the Waldorf School."

With a shared love for cheese and an absence of specialty beers, the Bystroms envisioned Biercuterie. Their extensive research, countless cheese tastings, and unwavering determination led them to the perfect location in downtown Freeland, next to the Whidbey Clay Center.

Biercuterie offers an impressive selection of 40-45 artisanal cheeses, 8-10 varieties of cured meats, and a curated assortment of craft beers and wines, many of which can’t be found anywhere else on the island. Their commitment to quality is evident in their focus on real ingredients, free from artificial flavors, growth hormones, and antibiotics.

"We want to recreate that moment of joy you feel when you take a bite of your favorite cheese," Sarah explains. "Biercuterie is about discovering new favorites and sharing delicious food with loved ones."

Beyond its impressive selection, Biercuterie is a hub for cheese education and community engagement. The shop encourages exploration through in-store tastings, allowing customers to savor the unique flavors before purchasing. They also host pairing events with local partners like Hierophant Meadery and Dancing Fish Vineyards, offering private tastings, Bloomy Cheese Cakes, and custom charcuterie boards.

With its warm ambiance and dedication to quality, Biercuterie is poised to become a beloved destination for cheese enthusiasts and a vibrant addition to the Whidbey Island community.
