South Whidbey at Home is looking for volunteers who want to help others in our community

by Carolyn Tamler 7th October 2024

South Whidbey at Home is a local non-profit dedicated to helping residents age in place and remain an active part of the South Whidbey community.

Pam Almeida, the Operations Director for South Whidbey at Home, notes that “People who give to others live longer and are part of a community of friendships.”

The theme for SW@Home  is “Neighbors helping neighbors.” The organization is growing as more people want to help others who may need help with a chore, grocery shopping or errands, a doctor’s appointment, or maybe just some conversation.

Nancy Van Wormer is the President of SW@Home, and is pleased that the organization has recently moved to new offices in Freeland that provide more space and a more comfortable setting. All that is asked of volunteers is that they are willing to have a background check and are interested in helping others.  She notes, “If you have one hour a month, you will be welcome to help.”  She adds, “Volunteers feel more empowered in this new community space.”

Members of SW@Home pay $240 a year to receive the services provided by the volunteers of the organization.

A major goal of SW@Home is to help seniors age in place and to help alleviate the isolation many experience.  The CDC recently reported that isolation in the United States is deadlier than smoking cigarettes.

SW@Home was started by Lynn Willeford in 2016, and was modeled after “Village to Village” that was developed on the East Coast. The organization benefits the volunteers as much as those who are being helped. Those who help with SW@Home are more engaged in the community and feel a sense of purpose and go home feeling energized.

Become a part of a close community of caring friends. Stop by the beautiful new office at 1796 Main Street, #104 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and chat with a Call Manager. Or give the office a call at 360-331-1971.

Nancy adds: “We are happy with whatever you can offer and there is never any guilt for “not doing enough.  We look forward to knowing you.”
