Artworks Gallery Faces Temporary Closure Due to Weather Emergency

by WhidbeyLocal 18th January 2024

Artworks Gallery found a new home tucked in the courtyard off Second Street in Langley's Creative Arts District in 2020, amidst the height of the Covid pandemic, after spending over ten years at Greenbank Farm. The new location provides a fresh canvas for artistic expression, inviting visitors into a vibrant space where creativity thrives. Unfortunately, fate dealt the gallery and other building tenants a challenging hand when Whidbey's winter weather forced the gallery to close until further notice. On Sunday, January 14, the gallery's contents were evacuated after a water pipe in the third-floor apartment burst and flooded the building with full force.

South End Gallery’s members rushed to assist, and six EMTs from the Langley Fire Department scrambled to get all the art, computers, and equipment out of the building. Without the fire department's help, the gallery might have been a total loss. “The fire department went above and beyond, staying for hours, using four-foot-wide squeegees to help gallery members remove several inches of standing water,” said VP Gaylen Whiteman of Artworks Gallery.

“Our members are devastated, and many depend on their art sales. Additionally, the gallery welcomed three exceptional new artists in December, who have made a significant investment to bring fresh artwork into our space. Those interested in supporting the gallery can visit our online store and stay tuned for our upcoming social media campaign showcasing recent work. Artists would be happy to deliver art on the island. Those visiting from the mainland can pick up art in local artists' studios. You can find the gallery online at www.artworkswhidbey.com or Facebook, Artworks Gallery, and Instagram @artworkswhidbey," President Christine Crowell added."

Currently, the members have no idea how long it will take to repair the building and be operational.
